Couples often ask me if it’s really possible – even realistic – to consider a destination wedding. For most, planning such a big event at a considerable distance from home seems overwhelming and likely very costly. Below are the most commonly asked questions I get asked regarding destination weddings, so if this is something you’re interested in, please read on!
Can I afford a destination wedding? Can I afford to get married in the Caribbean? Will my friends and family attend?
The answer is a resounding YES! to all these questions; you can have your wedding (cake) and honeymoon, too! Sandals® resorts coined the phrase “Weddingmoon,” and it couldn’t be more appropriate.
As a Certified Wedding planner, I have couples come to me frustrated and completely overwhelmed. By the time they do their guest lists and visit a bridal show or two, their budget has been revised at least 5 times. Sandals® currently offers your wedding, your style – your way! The wedding is free, plus it includes credit to personalize your day.
Is my wedding going to be a cookie cutter wedding?
If you have your heart set on a chocolate cake, it’s yours. A sand ceremony, seated formal reception or a catamaran cruise reception, we will make it happen. Whatever your budget, there is a wedding that will fit!
Will my friends and family attend?
I always say, those closest to you will make the effort; your dad’s college buddy whom you have to invite, even though no one has seen him in 20+ years, maybe not!
Depending on their budget, some couples will cover part of the cost for their attendants but, that’s not required and is the exception, not the rule.
So, how do I get started?
Visit a Certified Destination Wedding Planner. Someone who has done many, many weddings and knows all the ins-and-outs. She or he will become your best friend, your Mom or Dad, the “Good Cop/Bad Cop,” the liaison between you and your guests, family and the resort. A wedding planner knows the legal requirements and can assist in making things run smoothly and effortlessly.
What happens if “issues” arise?
I have had a Dad almost thrown out of a resort before the wedding even took place. I’ve had another decide to surprise the bride on the beach with his “own music” for the ceremony, and I’ve had a bridesmaid’s mother call me because her daughter booked her own flights and was at the resort with no room in a sold-out hotel. These issues were all taken care of before the bride even knew a thing about it.
The one thing that almost made my heart stop was the call from a sobbing bride who left all her legal paperwork at home with a wedding scheduled within 48 hours. Luckily, I happened to know someone in the town office in NH, where she was born. We got the necessary paperwork, sent it by FEDEX and arranged for a resort employee to pick it up 1 ½ hours away from the resort. The sobbing bride became a beaming, beautiful bride on her wedding day, and I took an extra day off that next week to recover!
If you are considering a destination wedding, you will not only be making your own memories, you will be giving your family and guests a memory of travel, which will last a life time!
Is an off-shore marriage license considered legal in the US?
In most cases yes, however don’t expect to be changing the name on your driver’s license the day after you come home! Most destination wedding locations can take up to eight weeks to send the finalized paperwork necessary to register your marriage at your town office.

As a Luxury Travel Manager who loves to get to know my clients and pick the best resort and destination to fit their needs, I often suggest Sandals and Beaches Resorts. Below are my top 3 Reasons to Choose a Sandals or Beaches Resort for Your Next Vacation!
1.) Truly All-Inclusive- All Sandals and Beaches Resorts vacation packages are truly all-inclusive. Not only are all of your meals, drinks, non-motorized watersports, activities, etc. included, but you’re not allowed to tip! Often times while visiting an all-inclusive property, the staff may expect tips, but this is not the case at Sandals Resorts. You’re only permitted to tip the butlers, if you have one, and that is at your discretion.
2.) Hospitality- The hospitality at these resorts is unbelievable, regardless of the destination. Sandals Resorts employees go above and beyond and really nurture their relationships with travel agents. For instance, I have contacts in virtually every department, from reservations to the GM of the hotels. If there’s ever a problem with a booking, or with my clients who are already at one of the Sandals Resorts, the issues are handled immediately and flawlessly.
3.) Something for Everyone- With close to 20 different resorts, there’s truly something for every type of traveler. Plus, each resort has its own personality. Some properties are more quiet and ideal for couples, while others are more lively and suited for young families. I like to recommend Beaches Ocho Rios for those who prefer smaller resorts and a more laid back setting. Beaches Negril Resort & Spa is great for travelers who want a bit more going on, and of course Beaches Turks & Caicos Resort Villages & Spa is HUGE and so much fun for all who visit!
