Enjoy some authentic Italian gelato in Rome.
Some of the best dinner foods in the world originate in Italy, so it is no surprise that it offers great dessert, too. Romans are surrounded by the cuisine all the time, and CNN's Budget Travel gives the inside scoop on the best artisanal gelaterias in town.

While most gelato shops offer traditional Roman flavors like chocolate, hazelnut and vanilla, many also offer unconventional flavor combinations.

The owners of Gelateria del Teatro on Via di San Samone (San Somone street),Stefano and Silvia Marcotulli, have created a raspberry-sage version of the dessert, as well as a creamy red wine-and-chocolate flavor, with fresh seasonal ingredients. Gelateria Ara Coeli in Piazza Venezia (Venice Square) also offers an alternative selection of lime celery and star anise gelati.

Gelateria Fatamorgana in Northern Rome offers 60-plus seasonal varieties, including a blend of cinnamon, tobacco and dark chocolate known as Kentucky, and mint-almond-ginseng mix called Panacea.

Having a hard time choosing one kind? Don't! According to CNN, it is standard for customers to ask for two different flavors.

Make sure your next European vacation is a sweet one by visiting one of Rome's many artisanal scoop shops.
