One of London's best-known landmarks, Marble Arch was originally built on the Mall as a new gateway to Buckingham Palace. Although it was moved to the present spot in 1851, it's still pretty exclusive:  

• only members of the royal family and the King's Troop, Royal Horse Artillery, are allowed to pass through it. As the name implies, it's made from Italian white Carrara marble, a favorite material of the Romans and, many centuries later, the Art Deco movement - and it was the latter that inspired Thistle Marble Arch.
