Excellence Power Catamaran to Barbuda
Barbuda is Antigua's "sister-isle" about 30 miles away.
With a small population of just 1,000 people Barbuda is
known for it's unspoiled beauty, long white-sand beaches,
clear waters, and one of the largest nesting sites of
the Frigate Bird, a tropical bird with a wingspan of
over 6 feet (as an adult). In our comfortable and fast
power-catamaran, it will take about an 1-1 ½ hours to
cross the ocean passage to Barbuda. We cruise up the
14-mile beach to Low Bay, which takes about 1/2 hour
with a breathtaking view of deserted white sand beach
streaked with shades of pink. In season turtle tracks
will be visible as some species may return every two
weeks or so to lay up to 30 nests of 300 eggs.
At Low Bay the Excellence will come up on the beach,
a ladder will be lowered and at this point you are free
to bask in the water or come with the group across to
the lagoon where the local guides will be waiting with
their small boats. With about 10 people in each boat
we are whisked across the lagoon and into the heart of
the mangroves to the Frigate bird colony. We can get
very close to these huge birds and the Barbudan guides
will enchant you with their local knowledge and obser-
vations of the lives of the "Man 'O' War" bird, perhaps
entice you to hold a jelly fish in this natural haven.
We return to the Excellence and after a short dip lunch
featuring barbequed chicken or pan fried catch of the
day will be served onboard. Our side dishes include
rice and peas, macaroni and cheese, coleslaw, tossed
salad and fresh rolls. For dessert freshly baked banana
bread is served. Please try a glass of wine with your
lunch.
Gently cruising back down the beach we can enjoy a view
of the historical Martello Tower, the exclusive hotels
Coco Point and The K Club, a favorite hideout for the
rich and famous.
Weather permitting we will anchor off the beach and enjoy
some snorkeling in the pristine waters of Spanish Point.
Relax and enjoy swimming and snorkeling with our experienced
staff available to help the novices before setting our
sights on Antigua and our passage home.
Duration: Approximately 8 hours
Days: Tuesdays
What to Bring: Guests should bring a bathing suit and shirt (T-shirt
recommended), and bring a change of clothes, sun block,
beach towel, and sturdy shoes (i.e. sneakers).
Included: Catamaran, open bar, trip to Frigate Bird
Sanctuary in Barbuda, snorkeling and lunch.
